About Kuk Sool Won™

Kuk Sool Won™ brings together the study of all traditional Korean martial arts.  As a martial arts system it covers a breadth of topics such as fighting arts, body conditioning, mental development and wellbeing, and traditional weapons training.  To give you an idea, by studying Kuk Sool Won™ you’ll develop the joint locking techniques of Jiu-Jitsu, the throwing principles of Judo, Tae Kwon Do’s kicking abilities, Karate’s hand strikes, falling and acrobatic skills, and a mastery of weapons.  Whilst developing physical skills are important, Kuk Sool Won™ holds self-discipline, continuous learning and respect as equally important behaviours for practitioners.

The name Kuk Sool Won™ literally translates to “National Martial Arts Association”.  Although it encompasses multiple Korean styles of martial arts, it is typically considered to be derived from Family/Tribal Martial Arts, Buddhist Martial Arts, and Royal Court Martial Arts.  A more detailed explanation of the history can be found on the World Kuk Sool Won Association® website.

Whilst we do hold competitions, Kuk Sool Won™ is not a combat sport.  This means that you do not need to compete in a tournament to progress until you become a black belt candidate.  We have an extensive syllabus, and providing that a student is able to demonstrate the values of Kuk Sool Won™, and the knowledge and skills appropriate to their belt, then they will progress.

About Our Founder

In Hyuk Suh is the founder, Grandmaster and President of the World Kuk Sool Association®. He has studied martial arts for more than 50 years, receiving his first instruction from his grandfather, Myung Deuk Suh, a master-instructor to the Korean Royal Court. After his grandfather’s death, he traveled throughout the Far East seeking out and studying additional aspects of the martial arts.

The knowledge he acquired from his grandfather and subsequent masters enabled him to establish Kuk Sool Won™. His organization now boasts 1.3 million members with over 800 schools worldwide in 27 different countries. Although expert in every aspect of martial arts, Grandmaster Suh is especially renowned for his mastery of pressure point and joint manipulation.
